OVERVIEW
Set in the baroque, macabre and opulent sea-faring city of Therae, John Blanche’s En Garde is a new low fantasy setting created by visionary artist, John Blanche. A place where the World’s finest and most cunning sword and pistol masters congregate to determine who is the greatest duelist living, and undead. This Kickstarter allows backers to collect various named characters who populate this new world of duels and danger!
Rendered in exquisite 54mm scale, perfect for hobbyists and collectors, and ideal for one versus one miniature combat, each John Blanche’s En Garde miniature is a living portrait of John Blanche’s singular vision.

- (UNLOCKED) Kickstarter funded in 12 minutes – Therae coin added to any order of duelists. No need to add the coin to your order. It will just be chucked in your box.
- (UNLOCKED) $100,000 reached – Ben Barbarine available as an add-on for all reward tier levels for $35.
- (UNLOCKED) $110,000. The Kickstarter exclusive Tethys Mermaids (one with pistol, one on anchor – pack of two) can be added to any reward tier level for $12. Please note, at certain reward Tier levels mermaids are all ready available for free so this new add-on just allows everyone to get them, or to add more. These mermaids will never be available again for sale.
- (UNLOCKED) $115,000. Two special 54mm skull miniatures, sculpted by Paul Hicks, will be thrown in for free at the Admiral Tier level. No need to select them as an add-on, they will simply be included with all Admiral Tier orders.

CREATORS
CREATOR, LEAD ARTIST, VISIONARY – John Blanche
Long revered as the architect of grim dark, Blanche brings decades of mythic vision to a new world he has been dreaming of for decades. For those who don’t know of John’s work, or who have been living under a rock for four decades, John Blanche is a English fantasy and science fiction artist, concept artist, illustrator, miniatures painter/ modeler and visualist who served as Games Workshop’s lead art director for years. He is one of the artists primarily responsible for crafting the look and feel of both Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000. He is multi-published and his incredible work stretches back to glorious paintings in the Tolkien Bestiary all the way through to his present work for En Garde. He is widely regarded as the father of the Grim Dark art movement and his work has quite literally inspired generations of artists and creatives, including his co-creators on this project. Within his mind lies Worlds and characters too numerous and wonderful to imagine, but projects like this one give us a tantalizing glimpse and should be cherished.
SCULPTORS – Paul Hicks and Patrick Masson
John Blanche created all new concept art for the project and personally selected sculptors to realize his concepts in three dimensions. The miniatures were traditionally sculpted by masters, Paul Hicks and Patrick Masson, and we believe what they have created represent some of the finest 54mm scale fantasy miniatures ever made
CO-CREATOR AND GAME DESIGNER – TUOMAS PIRINEN
Instrumental in building the narrative and lore,and of course the rules for this new low fantasy setting is Tuomas Pirinen. Tuomas is a game designer with over 30 years of experience, Tuomas has worked on dozens of tabletop games and video games. He has been a game and design director in companies such as Games Workshop, Electronic Arts, Remedy and Housemarque, a Playstation studio. Miniature game fans know him from the projects he has collaborated with John Blanche on, such as Realm of Chaos, Warhammer Fantasy Battle, Mordheim and most recently, Trench Crusade.
When presented with the idea for John Blanche’s En Garde, Tuomas immediately said that he would design a new type of game to bring John’s vision to the tabletop. When asked why he insisted on joining forces with John once again, Tuomas answered: “To let anyone else design the game would be unthinkable for me. One more time, old friend!”
ARTIST – Thomas Elliott
Thomas Elliott is an illustrator and concept artist specializing in sci-fi and fantasy art. He is most well known for his work with Games Workshop, where he was part of their in-house art team for over 5 years. Whilst there he created numerous book covers, battle scenes and internal illustrations. His most notable achievement for GW being the cover art for an edition of Age of Sigmar, Games workshop’s flagship fantasy game. More recently he created the cover for the new DOOM video game and also joined the Trench Crusade art team. When it came to John Blanche’s En Garde, John himself selected Thomas to join the project declaring him one of the best of this generation’s fantasy and science fiction artists. Thomas was given the important task of creating the concept art for John Blanche’s own miniature, Johannes ‚John‘ Weiss. The concept he created is truly magnificent, brilliantly capturing the spirit of the new World John created and the spirit of the man himself – but you can judge that for yourself.
There are also two chaps called Ronan and Nigel.
THE VANGUARD PROJECT
This early Kickstarter offers would-be duelists their first chance to enter Therae, unlocking an initial set of seven 54mm scale miniatures, and an eight miniature, Johannes ‚John‘ Weiss, who was designed by another genius fantasy artist, Thomas Elliott. Furthermore, depending on how many miniatures backers purchase, they will also pick up free add on miniatures, being the troublesome and disturbing, Tethys mermaids.
If the initial Kickstarter project proves popular and successful, it will be full steam ahead to the building of a complete John Blanche’s En Garde game, where duelists will battle one miniature versus one miniature in a unique and new type of dueling board game designed by Tuomas Pirinen. The game itself has already been designed and playtesting is underway. Again, should this Kickstarter prove successful, the aim will be to do a second Kickstarter campaign to release the full game, aiming to launch in later 2026, early 2027.
What will this early Kickstarter include?
Choose any number of high-quality 54mm scale miniatures to begin your collection. From an easy buy-in for a single duelist or build your cadre of fighters with the whole group. For those not familiar with the larger 54mm scale, below is a size comparison that shows how much bigger these miniatures are from traditional gaming scales (the metal miniature shown in the image immediately below is 28mm scale – please note that the metal miniature shown is not for sale. The dark grey resin miniature shown is the size of the miniatures that are being released in this project):
The main duelist miniatures you will receive will be high quality resin with metal components (the arms, weapons and smaller parts being cast in metal). The Tethys mermaids are entirely metal miniatures. After extensive testing, to ensure we get our backers the best products possible, it was determined it was best to provide mixed resin and metal kits for the main duelists. This cuts down on the potential of resin warping and curving that can happen with the thin blades and weapons on many of the duelists. Those parts will be cast in metal, while the main bodies of the miniatures will be resin.
ALL MINIATURES ARE SUPPLIED UNPAINTED AND COME WITH A SUITABLE BASE. RECOMMENDED FOR HOBBYISTS FOURTEEN (14) YEARS AND OLDER.

TIER ONE:
Pledge at least one dollar ($1.00) and show your support for the project. At this level you receive no items, unless you include an add-on. You can add the John Weiss miniature at this level of support.
TIER TWO:
Single Duelist – $35. Choose any 1 of the 7 main 54mm scale miniatures, excluding the John Weiss miniature. You will select your miniature via our post-campaign backer survey.
TIER THREE:
Two Duelists – $70. Choose any 2 of the 7 main 54mm scale miniatures, excluding the John Weiss miniature. You also get the Tethys Mermaid with pistol as a free add on. You will select your miniatures via our post-campaign backer survey.
TIER FOUR:
Three Duelists – $105. Choose any 3 of the 7 main 54mm scale miniatures, excluding the John Weiss miniature. You also get the Tethys Mermaid with pistol as a free add on. You will select your miniatures via our post-campaign backer survey.
TIER FIVE:
Four Duelists – $140. Choose any 4 of the 7 main 54mm scale miniatures, excluding the John Weiss miniature. You also get the Tethys Mermaid with pistol as a free add on. You will select your miniatures via our post-campaign backer survey.
TIER SIX:
Five Duelists – $175. Choose any 5 of the 7 main 54mm scale miniatures, excluding the John Weiss miniature. You also get the Tethys Mermaid with pistol as a free add on. You will select your miniatures via our post-campaign backer survey.
TIER SEVEN:
All seven Duelists – $210. You get all 7 of the main 54mm scale miniatures, excluding the John Weiss miniature. At this level you get one of the main 7 duelists for FREE (basically a 7 miniatures for the price of 6 deal). You also get the Tethys Mermaid with pistol as a free add on and the Tethys Mermaid on anchor as a free add on.
TIER EIGHT (THE ADMIRAL’S CHOICE):
The Lot, ten miniatures in total – $240. All 7 of the main duelists PLUS the John Weiss miniature PLUS the two Tethys Mermaids (Tethys mermaid with pistol and Tethys mermaid on anchor).
INITIAL ADD-ON OPTION FOR ALL OF THE ABOVE TIERS:
For an extra $45 (45 dollars) you can add John Weiss miniature to any of the tier levels above.
