Greetings, friends!
Pull up a stool and mind the candle. Something has been stirring in the old woods to the east, and those who travel that road return with a particular look in their eyes. Not fear exactly. More like reverence. Or warning.
The forests there hum with a sound you feel before you hear. A deep, resonant drone that fills the chest and empties the mind. The trees run gold with something that isn’t sap, and where it pools, things grow that have no business growing.
Strange, armored shapes move through the amber-lit gloom. Some patrol with cold discipline. Others drift like they’re dreaming, the swarm trailing behind them the way shadows follow the sun, not out of obedience exactly, more like the air itself has already decided. And at least one thing out there is so wrong in its size and shape that the loggers refuse to speak its name. The ones who’ve seen it up close aren’t much for speaking at all anymore.
Not everything in those woods belongs to the hive. The Pale Wanderer moves through the old boughs with butterflies trailing behind because they know better than to lose sight of her. And deeper still, older than the amber, older than the forest’s name, the Rooted Warden watches. Its eyes were open long before yours were.
And above it all, she waits. Robed in dark and gold, winged and terrible, her court assembled and her hive prepared. A queen does not need to chase. She only needs to call.
Do not follow the drone into the trees, traveler. Those who answer never quite return the same. Meet the Children of Amber.
