May Release Preview

Thank you to all our subscribers for supporting another month! Erin and I saw Project Hail Mary last month, which might have inspired Erin to sculpt some rock golems for this collection 😆 But it also got us talking about how there are so few big budget movies that aren’t remakes (sometimes of a movie that was already a remake). But to us, diversity and newness is fun! Seeing something that hasn’t been fully explored, being really off the wall, or going in a totally different direction has always been our MO. It’s heartening to see that something that isn’t a remake of a remake can become so successful. And so I’m continually grateful that we can keep creating our weird little universe, finding success in our own tiny corner of the internet.

I hope you’ll also keep feeling inspired and share your prints and paints with us on social media and in our discord channel! If you’re a patron, connect your account here to get dropped into the server by the bot: https://www.patreon.com/settings/apps

Erin’s main inspiration this month was Final Fantasy Tactics geomancers, hence the two desert elf characters in this collection! Diosamblet from our discord was shocked when our first preview came out, a Stonebinder giant, because this is something that actually exists already in the D&D universe. Luckily, Erin had never planned for them to be all giants, so we kept our cred as a fringe creator. The Stonebinders are a new Taforalt Desert group, living out in the deep desert where usually only the Mazigh and the Ahurazad dare to go. But perhaps your adventurers will make their way out there by accident?

Our beautiful bases and terrain pack was sculpted by Calrais this month, with concept art by Paul Ferret. The Throwbacks include Esmar, Boondaburra Diplomat, and her bodyguards Ishu and Goru, who are (fittingly) residing in the city of Jebel Irhoud. We also have Atropos, Noctuoidea Speculatore, and the July 2022 Bases and Terrain Pack this month.

Conflux Creatures has been hard at work and is now up to March 2026! You can get the most recent years collections from this directory. I’m still slowly working on getting the lore into cobramode.com but I’m doing it on a staging site so that I can get it up in chunks.

The full lore can still be found on the CobraCompendium: https://bit.ly/3om6snO

This month’s lore:

Stonebinders (Ayt Uzran)

In the deepest desert, sheltering amongst the worn-down crags of former mountains and cliffs, live those called Stonebinders. Called the Ayt Uzran (People of the Stone) by the Mazigh, they are consummate artisans of stone and gems, able to use magic to craft and shape nearly anything that can be imagined. Their most unique creations are their stone golems, crafted from a stoneseed spirit and bound to a creator. Even the Ahurazad Sphinxes acknowledge their skill, bringing their floating cities to the Stonebinders for occasional maintenance and trade.

Azrukan, Stonebinder Master

One of the oldest master artisans in his agadir (stronghold), kindly Azrukan the giant has taught many generations of stonebinders in his day. Despite his serious mien, he is a patient and thorough instructor of the art, and considered to be one of the most skilled in existence today. One can notice this at once by his garb, which is of Ahurazad make; such garments are only available in trade with the Ahurazad themselves, meaning that he has clients among those lofty personages.

Ukanir, Stonebinder Golem

Each golem made by the stonebinders is sacred and unique, formed around a stoneseed and usually shaped according to the soul of the seed. The seed is the heart of the golem, and destruction of a golem’s seed is considered murder amongst the stonebinders. Ukanir, one of Azrukan’s first creations, was an experiment in binding a stoneseed to an existing piece of a statue. It is an intellectus golem used to inscribe knowledge and memories and recall them. Ukanir holds records of Azrukan’s techniques and creations, inventories of materials and transactions, and even information about Azrukan himself. In the way of stonebinders, Ukanir is quite slow at inscribing and recalling knowledge, and its voice is like grinding stone.

Velun & Zarek, Stonebinder Golems

Helper golems created to do simpler, menial tasks, Velun and Zarek are less complex creations than Ukanir, who can speak and communicate using language. These two can understand spoken commands, but are limited to various grinding and whistling sounds themselves, and are usually found tidying up Azrukan’s workshop, moving materials, or shooing away pest animals. Velun, the shorter of the two, is more curious, while Zarek is more responsible.

Taluzir, Stonebinder Shaper

Azrukan’s finest student, Taluzir has recently finished her master work and is waiting to be evaluated for promotion. While one can definitely see the lineage of her craftsmanship, her style is distinct and sure to capture the eyes of aficionados – though as is common amongst her kind, she isn’t flashy or prone to bragging. The greatest talent a Stonebinder must have is patience, and this is something she has in excess. Taluzir is the first Stonebinder in her family for 2 generations, bringing great honor to her parents and sibling.

Kheziran, Stonebinder Golem

An intelligent, multipurpose golem created by Taluzir as her master work, Kheziran is capable of speech and reasoning and can perform most tasks asked of it. The long arms are well suited to lifting, carrying, and manipulating the monolithic stones that Stonebinders typically use in their craft. The name “Kheziran” means “Noble of the deepest stone”, reflecting Taluzir’s pride and love for her creation.

Nazurim, Stonebinder Cutter

As a Cutter, Nazurim is an apprentice who is just learning the craft, below the rank of Shaper. He’s successfully completed his first golem, a simple work meant to familiarize him with the basic concepts of Stonebinding. Though he has a long way to go, Nazurim is a hard worker who looks up to his mentor, Taluzir, and has much respect for the craft. He deliberately weighted his staff to help with his muscle training.

Belim, Stonebinder Golem

A simple golem that can do menial tasks, but can only understand a limited number of simple commands. Its movements are a bit awkward and unstable due to the rough workmanship, but it has a lot of spunk.
