The Uprising

Tactical combat Skirmish in the Age of northern Crusades. Teutonic Knights, pagan Prussians, Gods and Demons at war for the Baltics

It is the year of our Lord 1260 in the Baltics. At the request of the Polish Grand Duke Konrad of Mazovia, the Teutonic Order has been tasked with Christianizing the Prussian lands for almost 30 years. The pagan tribes were previously unruly and difficult to dissuade from their faith. Their uprising raged for a total of 52 years. But the world should never know how close it was to the abyss….

In their desperation, the tribes of the Prussians turn to their old gods and, unlike the last 1000 years, they answer. If the Prussians were subjugated and their religion wiped out, the gods would lose all their power. Perkunas, the highest of the Baltic gods, sends Giltine, the goddess of death, to help the mortal warriors avert the danger posed by the crusaders. She leads an army of so-called “Touched Ones”, people to whom she has granted magical abilities, and awakens the spirits of the Baltic to fight for her. Aitvaras are fire demons, Leschi are the lords of the forests. Even harmless goblins enter their service with weapons. They all follow the call of the pale princess. The Knights of the Teutonic Order face a supernatural enemy that must be banished. They trust in their brotherhood, steadfastness, the protection of their armor and the points of their swords. But it will take far more than steel to deal with the goddess of death.

And even if they do not know it from each other, the Order and Perkunas have the same fear: if Giltine wins, it will be difficult to banish her again.

And so it begins…

…the uprising!

The Uprising is a 28mm tactical combat Boardgame, played on a 25mm Square Grid board, but can also be played on a boardless tabletop. Featuring highly detailed Miniatures from Northern Crusades Miniatures, especially developed for the Uprising and a unique combat, moral and campaignsystem developed by Bernhard Kleber, the Author of Dockfighters the Ale Wars.

So what is it all about:

The Uprising will take you to the Baltics in the 1260s. You will choose either the Teutonic Knights or heathen Prussians to play.

You will play Scenarios that will comprise of Missions for the Teutons and the Prussians. Both have different goals, so both can loose, both can win or leave the field of battle.

Teutons and Prussians play differently.

In the course of Missions your Teutonic Knights will gather experience and become more deadly warriors. There will be hard decisions. Sometimes its better to loose a mission before loosing a Knight. As you have to „make“ your Veteran Warriors, each lose is dire.

The Prussians do not gain individual experience, apart from the Chieftain. They gain Threat as a whole by winning more and more missions. Successful Warriors are granted the blessing of Giltine and here Demons, so more powerful creatures will join the fight. But if they loose battles, three time in a row, Giltine is not pleased with your chieftain and he will be exchanged. Game over.

The Prussians fight with their allies of baltic mythological Beasts like Kobolds, Leshi, Aitvaras and the Godess Giltine herself. The interesting mechanic is:

They are not always on the board. You will get „Dusin“-Markers:
(Giltine) touched warrior may enter the „World between the worlds“ . That means they are replaced by these markers. Anywhere on the board, they can than be exchanged by Miniatures again. Sounds unfair and scary? It is! But thats the matter of fighting a supernatural enemy.

There is also Fear:

If the Teutons manage to overcome their fear of the Godess, they will get Boni during the Mission. But when the enemy is too strong, looses rise and the fear will increase, Giltine will get an edge in the battle.

Between Battles you can organize your Force, get more warriors or do research. Invent new weapons and strategies to fight your enemy.
