THE REMNANTS OF OLD BYZANTIUM

Hello everyone! Like many of you I’ve fallen hard and fast for the Trench Crusade setting and I’ve been lucky enough to be given the go ahead to add my little spin on the New Antioch Faction! Before we get into things, I just wanted to say a massive thank you to all of you who have followed along the last 5 years, and supported me as an artist through the past 6 Campaigns. I wouldn’t be here without you.

This project will allow you to build a compatible warband using Trench Crusade rules, or for those brave enough to tread the water of unofficial supplements, a Byzantium Variant for the New Antioch faction can be found below. A great many thanks to those brave volunteers who helped with playtesting and balancing!

Finally all the lore tidbits you find throughout this Frontier are written by me, and are unofficial. The lore has been included to help set the mood of the faction, and with the hopes that some may enjoy it. Any Lore released by Factory Fortress INC will supersede the lore found here. Remnants of Old Byzantium: Soldiers of Trebizond is set in the Trench Crusade universe however it is not Canon in the way the wonderful Westfalia’s Red Brigade is.

This is a work of fiction. The base game, Trench Crusade, is intended for mature audiences, and so is this supplement.

UNOFFICIAL CONTENT: The lore and units of the Remnants of Byzantium have been written by fans and are not Official Content by Factory Fortress Inc. and may only be used in regular games of Trench Crusade with all players involved agreeing.

THE BUILDERS

THE FOEDERATI

The Foederati are the very essence of citizen-soldiers, for every adult in Trebizond between the ages of sixteen and thirty are counted amongst their ranks. For nine months out of the year their duty is to tend their fields, man their market stalls and crew their fishing boats. But upon their enlistment they are assigned a three month season in which they must stand upon the Painted Walls and cast down the Heretic Legions that seek to snuff out the last light of the Roman Empire.

THE VARANGIANS

While the Hardy Northern Stock these warriors once hailed from has been diluted, only being renewed when a rare Iron-Longship crosses the black sea, they still fulfill their Oaths as Bodyguards to the Basileus. Serving as shock and suppression troops for the Themes of Chaldia they continue to retain all their famed ferocity from ages past. The rumours of a Varangian Free Hold within New Antioch, decendants of those Varangians that fled the Sack of Constantinople, has stoked a deep emnity within the breasts of the Varangians of Trebizond.

THE CATAPHRACTS

Pressed on all sides and cut off from supply, the engineers of Trebizond had to be more economical with their efforts to create a Force Multiplier. While less protective then the suits used in the levant the Cataphract Light Machine armour allows any Kontoubernia to form an agile, rapid reaction force capable of changing the tides of even the largest battle.

THE KENTARCHS

After their fifth year of service, foederati who have shown a pechant for leadership and thinking on their feet can be offered a place at the Scholai in exchange for a life long commitment to the Theme. Here these hopefuls learn the Strategikon of Byzantium at the feet of retired or maimed great heroes for three years before graduating as a Kentarch, the leader of a hundred men and the first step upon the ladder of their officer career.

THE ECCLESIARCHY

The Ecclesiarchy of Trezibond is the last hold out of the Creed of Nicaea, it is completely divorced from the New Orthodoxy found in Europe and lacks the… advancements and technological wings that the Church in Europe has developed. Instead it is a time capsule of the Greek Orthodox Church at the time of the sack, standing deliberately unchanged as a form of remembrance to a brighter age in Christendom’s history.

THE ARMOURY

When it comes to arming the Foederati that makes up Trebizonds defenders there is little standardization. Every rifle, every sword and every round is vital to it’s defence. After every repelled assault upon the Painted Walls scavanger teams quickly sally forth to liberate arms, armour and other equipment from dead legionarries before quickly transporting them to the Ecclissiarchs for consecration.

Size Comparisons

As mentioned previously we are providing the Soldiers of Trebizond in both 28mm and 32mm scales. Since Trench Crusade is a model agnostic game it is very likely that peoples play groups lean towards one scale more then the other. To ease everyones printing experience it is simpler for us to do the resizing once instead of picking one scale and expecting those looking for the other scale to make do.

WHY BACK THE BYZANTINES

Carried from the high Norselands to Byzantium, these weapons have been passed down through the Varangian Guard for generations. Even as the handle is replaced, the axe-head reforged, the runes etched again, the spirit of their homeland still lives within.

This all started as a thought experiment about a simple throw away line in the Lore Primer. Thanks to the generousity of the Factory Fortress team we were able to take that small snippet and come up with just one of many possible answers to the question of what happened to the last remanants of the Roman Empire.

Now whether you intend to use these models with the Byzantium Warband Variant or simply run them as one of the official New Antioch Warbands, you and your play group can campaign to relieve Trebizond from the centuries of siege it has endured.
