Blood Red Skies B-26B Marauder squadron – 33,50€

The B-26 Marauder was a fast medium bomber with clean aerodynamic lines, all-metal construction and two R-2800 Double Wasp radial engines.

Marauders initially had a high accident rate as its speed and small wings made it difficult to fly. Improved training and a wing redesign rectified this and by the end of WW2 the Marauder had the lowest loss rate of any U.S. Army Air Force bomber. Over five thousand Marauders were built and it served in the European, Mediterranean and Pacific theatres.

The He 111 was the Luftwaffe’s most numerous medium bomber at the opening of World War 2 and arguably the most iconic. Although it was sturdy and well-liked, the Battle of Britain revealed the He 111’s flaw of weak defensive armament. As more modern bombers became available on the front line the He 111 was progressively moved into various roles including maritime patrol and transport/logistics.

In May 1943, Lieutenant James ‘Boss’ Farrell piloted his B-26 Marauder, christened ‘Flak-Bait’ after the family dog, across the Atlantic to join the USAAF 322nd Bombardment Group in England. ‘Boss’ Farrell soon found his bomber was aptly named as it collected numerous hits in his 72 combat missions flown up to and including D-Day. Yet, even when on only one engine, ‘Flak-Bait’ always brought Farrell home. After 102 total missions, Farrell returned to the U.S. in July 1944, but ‘Flak-Bait’ fought on and survived the war with 207 missions in total.

Captain Gan Gyong-Duk led the 59th FAR, a North Korean MiG-15 squadron which was pulled from the frontlines to form a ‘Special Attack Group’ in 1951. Gyong-Duk’s command was tasked with intercepting enemy aircraft of the USN’s Task Force 77, which were then operating over the eastern parts of North Korea largely unopposed.

Gyong-Duk’s early model MiG-15s achieved significant results against American piston-engine Corsairs and Skyraiders. At least 15 USN aircraft were claimed destroyed, with Captain Gyong-Duk being credited with no less than 10 victories. The USN was forced to re-task F9F Panthers as escorts, pulling them away from vital ground-attack missions. For his efforts, Gyong-Duk was awarded with the Hero of the DPRK honour.

In the Korean War, Jabara’s 4th Fighter-Interceptor Wing, with the new F-86A Sabre, was deployed to counter the MiG threat. He downed his first MiG on 3 April 1951 and his fourteenth MiG in July 1953. This, with his one victory from WWII, earned him triple ace status. His first combat with USAF F-84 Thunderjets in November 1951, showed his willingness to attack superior numbers of enemy aircraft and risk G-induced blackouts to achieve favourable shots. Over the next three months, he accounted for seven enemy aircraft destroyed and two damaged.
