Hasslefree: Artemis 2.0 Kickstarter [NSFW]

Der letzte, eher unrühmliche Hasslefree Kickstarter ist langsam auf der Zielgeraden, und Kev White finanziert ein neues Modell für Maler.

HF Hasslefree Artemis 2 Kickstarter 1

This project aims to fund the production of one of my recent sculpts that is otherwise unlikely to see the light of day.

My name is Kev White. I have been a professional sculptor of miniatures since 1993 and I continue to sculpt in the hope that one day I will be half decent at what I do 😀

I love sculpting and I am always trying to improve the anatomy of miniatures, so a lot of my process is based on developing my skills using different techniques, like the ecorché method of sculpting. This involves making a skeleton, adding muscles and then skin over the top.

In 2006 this exploration resulted in a 40mm female warrior I called „Artemis“ (no, she’s not meant to represent the Greek goddess, I just liked the name).

The original 40mm Artemis, as painted by Roman Lappat

Although she has proved popular since her release and I continue to like the sculpt (this is not at all common for me – I usually find fault with everything I make ten seconds after finishing it) I always felt I could improve. Last year I attempted this while also pushing myself out of my comfort zone (something I try to do as much as possible because I find it’s the best way to grow) by working in a scale I’m not comfortable with – 75mm. The result is this little lady, the miniature I want your help to get produced:

This is my Artemis. She is 77mm from toe to the top of her head and 104mm from the bottom of the base to the top of the crest on her helmet.

In addition to being unfamiliar with working in this scale, I also have no idea if people actually want this kind of thing. I’ve lived my entire professional life being largely unaware of scales outside of those I game in (28mm/32mm) so this is all quite new to me and makes this project just a little bit scary. I mean I own a couple of larger miniatures, but all they do is look pretty on a shelf. Can I rely on there being a horde of people like me who buy cool stuff just because it looks nice? I guess we’ll see 🙂

If it should prove that people do want to buy this larger scale miniature from me (to put together, undercoat and act as a really good looking dust magnet like mine do) I will add variants as stretch goals – the first being a clothed and armoured version in (kind of) realistic costume. Be warned though, it’s a period that spans a lot of time so I might take items from all over and just stick them all together then sit back and listen for the distant explosions of historians‘ heads. Since this particular miniature isn’t actually made yet I’m afraid you’ll have to look at the picture below and imagine it all mashed up together…..

Can you tell what it is yet? Picture all the bits and pieces on the right magically grafted on to the naked woman with the big knife. I know, right? Awesomeness! Yes, I’ve included another helmet, that’s because I’ll change the one she’s already got. This option will unlock if the project reaches £7,500.

…… and the second being an actual representation of the Greek goddess Artemis (just to finally shut up all those people who say „you know there is actually a goddess called Artemis **strokes beard** but she doesn’t have a sword or shield and instead uses a bow and arrows,“ as if I didn’t know that).

HF Hasslefree Artemis 2 Kickstarter 5

An ancient Roman copy of a Greek statue depicting Artemis (minus her bow, probably thanks to some Vandal). She will unlock if the project reaches the heady heights of £10k.

The figurines will be moulded and cast by my friends Tim and Mark at Grey Matter Figures in Ripley. They are true artists in their own fields and have been reproducing my work for over a decade.

If this Kickstarter doesn’t meet its goal I doubt she will be produced within the next three years, if at all. Also, I have no intention of ever setting up a webshop to sell my pet projects. Other Kickstarters might happen from time to time (depending on the popularity of this project – 75mm Kalee maybe?) but I do not intend to sell copies of the miniature you see above anywhere else.

If it turns out that there are a lot of people who would like to see me make more larger scale miniatures I will sculpt more. So I guess my future is in your hands!

Kinda?

Risiken und Herausforderungen

The basic miniature of Artemis is complete and ready for full scale reproduction, all that is required is the funding to let me pay for it. The only risk I can see is if either Mark or Tim drop dead and force me to look for alternate casters, which may delay things a couple of months.

Die Kampagne läuft noch 29 Tage.
