More piggies for the printer — Brigands

WM3d Feb26 02

The Thornfall Alliance makes extensive use of brigands in its armies, a legacy of the many warbands united under its banner. Once outlaws and mercenaries for hire, these farrow have found their prior background has prepared them marvelously for their new role as soldiers.

Unsurprisingly, not all brigands are equal in terms of expertise, but membership within Carver’s nascent empire offers a degree of training and mentorship that the farrow have never previously known. Veteran brigands who have grown too old for active service or are recovering from injury are charged with drilling aspiring warriors, passing on their experience and ensuring casualties can be easily replaced by new troopers.

Brigand equipment has also benefitted from the changes afforded by Carver’s revolution. Previously, warbands were reliant on availability of pillaged rifles, weapons that were often unsuitable for a nomadic lifestyle due to their fragility and lack of suitable ammunition. Increasingly, however, brigands are now armed with pig irons created by the Thornfall Alliance’s blacksmiths, weapons which are considerably more hardwearing and simplistic in function, and have an ample supply of munitions for them.

Brigands are the equal of many frontline troopers in this new era, and oftentimes as difficult to bring down as the wild animals they resemble. They approach each battlefield as forward scouts, digging in ahead of the rest of the army, and using their rifles to prey upon and pick off the enemy as the remaining farrow advance.

The Thornfall Alliance is expanding again, and this time it’s a fresh pen of pigs ready to hit the table.

Brigands have always been a staple of farrow warbands since the early days of Mk.I–part outlaw, part mercenary, and like most of the farrow, all attitude.

If you want to add some serious firepower to your army and keep your opponent second guessing the positioning of the model(s) you mark as ‘prey’, you’re going to like these.

Keep them in line, mostly — Brigand Warlord

WM3d Feb26 03

Typically achieving their position through a host of bloody battles, warlords are experienced veterans that have scraped together enough clout to command the respect of their peers and call themselves a leader. For many of these warlords, their position within the Thornfall Alliance has proven a bitter pill to swallow; they have gone from absolute command of their warband to subservient officers that must follow the orders of either Carver or one of his trusted inner circle.

Yet, the Thornfall Alliance does offer the warlords some sense of security. Previously, no warlord’s position was truly secure, requiring demonstrations of cunning and sheer brutality to keep the ambitions of their subordinates in line. Whilst this is ostensibly still true, Carver’s empire affords a structure and chain of command within which only those that are weak or incompetent need worry—two traits which few, if any, warlords are guilty of.

Every brigand unit needs someone shouting orders and the occasional disciplinary beating, and who better to mete this out than a Brigand Warlord?

The line between chieftain and warlord has always been a little blurry in Farrow culture. Plenty of warlords have had to swallow the uncomfortable truth that they’re no longer the biggest pig in the pen. Though that’s a deal most warlords can live with, especially the ones smart enough to know that Carver’s empire rewards competence and offers more plunder than ever before.

A bigger, bolder Craghorn

WM3d Feb26 04

Southern Kriels fans, you’re getting a proper centrepiece this month.

February includes an extreme alternative sculpt for Sgt Craghorn. A bold new pose, packed with presence, and yes, he has a tactical rock like all good commanders should.

If you love the Kithguard aesthetic and want your warcaster to stand out on the table, this one’s going to be hard to resist.
