DO NOT KICK THIS HORNET NEST!

The Brood Hive has just released with this month’s Savage Swarm Tribe offering on MyMiniFactory.com.

Welcome back, Monsterpocalypse players! March brings the long-anticipated release of the Savage Swarm, including their never-before-seen faction building, the Brood Hive!

Much like the Elemental Champions before them, these monstrous mutated insects have been pining for their faction building for quite some time now. And, finally, the Swarm has a place to call home:

Monpoc Savagetribe

Unleashed upon the surface world anew, the Savage Swarm have begun to make their home in ominous, towering earthen dwellings that have come to be known as Brood Hives. Rivaling the size of mankind’s greatest skyscrapers, these massive towers teem with the rapidly-growing reinforcements that constantly replenish the swarm’s ranks.

Scientists who have studied these structures have yet to understand how simple insects have managed these feats of engineering. Of particular note is the presence of unexpected and unique mineral deposits that reinforce the hive’s walls – deposits which rival the strength of mankind’s most advanced hyperalloys.

Eradicating these structures has become one of G.U.A.R.D.’s highest priorities, as an unchecked infestation could have devastating consequences for all nearby life, though the byzantine, twisting corridors often prove difficult to scour completely. Controlled demolition of these structures, once the local Savage Swarm infestation has been eradicated, often drive out a few lingering stragglers — frequently including decidedly non-insectoid scavengers and opportunists hoping to plunder the undefended minerals and inexplicably strong composites that line the cramped warrens and tunnels beneath the surface.

As many had speculated, the Brood Hive sports the standard “Faction building” rules: it has an above-average DEF 7 and the associated Faction Base rule provides a discount when spawning Savage Swarm units.

In addition, the Brood Hive sports two other rules: Incombustible, and the new Hive rule.

Thanks to Incombustible, when destroyed, the Brood hive leaves a debris tile instead of a hazard tile. Rather appropriate considering it is essentially a giant mound of earth!

However, the new Hive rule is what truly sets this building apart from the rest! When the Brood Hive is destroyed, the player who brought that specific Brood Hive model to the game can put some number units into play adjacent to the model before it is removed from the map. Were these units hiding in the twisting tunnels, just waiting to emerge and ambush their foes, or did they simply lose their way in the dark warrens while clearing out the Hive’s former inhabitants? (Fortunately, you get to decide!)

Whatever the reason, Hive allows you to place a number of units with a cumulative COST of 2 or less into play. “Cumulative” really does mean “cumulative”, here: add up the printed COSTs of those units, and as long as the total COST is 2 or less, you can put those units into play. In practice, this means you can put two 1-COST units on the table, or put one 2-COST unit on the table. Remember, because this does not happen during the Spawn Phase and because models are not being spawned, spawn cost discounts such as the Skyscraper’s Discount rule, or even the Savage Swarm Base rule (and others like it) do not apply.

The most common misconception noted about Hive during testing was that testers mistakenly believed they could only place Savage Swarm units into play. That is not the case! Tanks, jets, robots, aliens, horrors, sea creatures, space dragons, dinosaurs, and more have been spotted emerging from this building!

And, remember: Hive only triggers when the building is destroyed. If, for example, you Retrofit a Hive into another building through some clever and industrious engineering, or Raze it to the ground with a well-timed rocket launch, the Hive is not destroyed, simply removed from the table and replaced. Paying careful attention to the wording is useful if you want to prevent unwelcome visitors on your doorstep!

We won’t spoil all the secrets and tricky plays to be had; discovering the potential is half the fun! Will you flood the opponent’s side of the table with these buildings, ready to unleash havoc on their secured buildings? Do you want to discourage a rampage through your power base, by all but guaranteeing the rampaging monster will be surrounded by armed and dangerous units at the end of the carnage? Are you interested in discovering what other shenanigans you can cook up? Or, do you just want a really gorgeous building for your kaiju to fight around?

No matter your reason, all you kaiju fans can get yourself a Brood Hive today on MyMiniFactory.com!

Be sure to join us next time, when we’ll talk about the feared Necroscourge, releasing in April!

Remember to reach out and crush someone!
