Marvel: Crisis Protocol – Panel to Play: Xavier’s Students Affiliation Pack

Xavier’s students unite in today’s From Panel to Play, your first in depth look at new releases for Marvel: Crisis Protocol! That’s right, we are going back to school for these characters. This affiliation box is the natural expansion for the X-Men Starter Box as it provides four characters and their associated Team Tactic Cards for players to use to reinforce the Starter Box roster.

The first of these characters is one many players have struggled to find recently: Magik. This soulsword wielding mutant was adjusted in order to increase her output and is now back to lay waste to her foes. She has seen improvements to her Stamina value and the addition of the Hex special condition to her Bolts of Osthur attack along with gaining an immunity to the Incinerate special condition–a very thematic addition to the Queen of Limbo.

Coming along with Magik is her Team Tactic Card Journey Through Limbo. This card allows Magik to forcibly relocate a character and give them the Incinerate special condition. Use this against enemies to set up KOs or potentially save allies from enemies if you can pull them out of range of enemy attacks, but watch out, that Incinerate will give them a boost on their attack on that allied character.

Accompanying Magik is her brother, Colossus. Piotr has had multiple changes over time as his initial release was not up to par and the first round of improvements did not quite achieve the desired goals. This release provides a fully updated card for him and incorporates all of the errata that has been applied to him. His attacks have been adjusted to displace enemies while his protective nature, displayed in his Big Brother superpower, allows him to defend his team by taking hits or advancing into enemy attackers to dissuade their continued assault. Additionally, this being of Organic Steel cannot be Pushed by enemy effects and now moves significantly faster since his Speed was upgraded to Medium making him a formidable character for any opponent to fight.

The famous Fastball Special Team Tactic Card also makes a return along with a card inspired by, but not limited to, Colossus–Indomitable. This Team Tactic Card provides all Marvel: Crisis Protocol squads the ability to ignore a single Throw or Push effect which can be game saving if timed well.

The third character in this pack is Bishop, a character with only a single change since his release, but this change is very important for him. His Overload superpower has had its timing changed from during the Power Phase to during the Cleanup Phase. The previous timing resulted in players leaving him at 1 Stamina at the end of the Round so that he would be Dazed and unusable for the entire following Round. The new timing will Daze him immediately before Dazed characters flip to Injured and remove the Dazed status giving him a significantly smoother play experience.

The final character in this Affiliation Pack is the king of BAMF!, Nightcrawler. Kurt Wagner has not had many changes since his release. His Invisible in Shadow superpower now grants Stealth instead of granting him the effects of Stealth without being called Stealth. This allows other effects that specifically look for Stealth to affect him when they previously could not. The timings of Teleporting Strike and Puff of Smoke were also adjusted to make him more intuitive to play.

Nightcrawler’s return also brings back the Mass Transit Team Tactic Card that allows for him to Place multiple squad members along with himself at the cost of an Action and the Stagger special condition. The movement granted by this card is impressive and in the right situations can be well worth the cost to Nightcrawler.

Xavier’s students are all taught to Preserve the Dream of peaceful coexistence with humanity. This Team Tactic Card allows for the students to rally around an allied character that has been targeted by a powerful enemy creating opportunities to turn the tide with smart Advances that can enable other superpowers like Big Brother or effects like Journey Through Limbo.
