Armies of the Soviet Union: Third Edition – Army Special Rules
We begin to reveal what the upcoming Armies of the Soviet Union holds in store for Bolt Action players!
It’s time to start our series of articles revealing what you can expect to see inside Armies of the Soviet Union: Third Edition, and as is traditional we’re starting with a look at the national special rules. These are a significant part of what makes each army different on the tabletop, and can have a big impact on how you build your forces. Let’s dive in!
Bolt Action Armies of the Soviet Union: Third EditionArmies of the Soviet Union has everything you need to dominate the Eastern Front on the tabletop. In previous editions of Bolt Action, Soviet players enjoyed a free Inexperienced Rifle Squad, courtesy of the Quantity Has a Quality All of Its Own rule – this has been removed as part of the wider ‘no free units’ ethos of Bolt Action: Third Action, and in its place comes Lack of Radios, allowing Soviet players to take their Command Vehicles as a free upgrade rather than the usual +10pts, but with a correspondingly reduced Command radius. Every point counts in Bolt Action, and this rule gives you the opportunity to keep costs down in your Armoured Platoons – just make sure to keep your tanks nice and close!
Also joining the roster is Flying Tank. Representing the legendary Il-2 ‘Sturmovik’ aircraft, this rule makes it much more likely that a Soviet Air Force Forward Observer will call in a powerful Ground Attack Aircraft, and much harder for enemy flak to shoot it down!
Finally for the new additions, we have For the Motherland!, which makes Inexperienced Soviet units just a little bit better at shedding Pin Markers, meaning they’re more likely to pass those all-important Order Tests when it matters most – provided they’re close enough to the enemy.
Next to this trio of new rules, we’ve got three ‘returners’ – these rules gave great service over the past two editions, and will continue to do so for years to come. If it’s not broken, there’s no need to fix it! Scroll through to refresh yourself on The Great Patriotic War, Massed Batteries, and Not One Step Back! – they’re all part of what makes a Soviet force unique!
With the ‘whole-army’ rules covered, it’s time to look at the second half of the national special rules. Germany has Defend the Fatherland!, the US By Air, Land, and Sea, Great Britain For King & Country!, and the Soviet Union has…
Hammer & Sickle
As you can see, the three options allow you to tailor your force to be the feared and fanatical NKVD, die-hard Naval Brigade, or the oft-underappreciated but very determined Airborne troops. This adds even more flavour to what is already a very diverse book, and allows you to ensure that your weapons teams and the like are just as tough as the troops they’re supporting. When you add in the wide range of Soviet Army units, you’ve got a book packed with list-building potential. However you want to build your Soviet collection for Bolt Action: Third Edition, the choice is yours!
