Carnevale: Blood Bartering – The Death Duelist
17 July 2025|Carnevale
The House of Virtue is a rising power within the floating city, with more and more women finding empowerment within its walls. Anyone who has been keeping up with the changes taking place at the Guild’s most illustrious pleasure house will know that blood is now the most spent currency. Following the binding of Baba-Yaga and the siphoning of her power, a large number of Harlots have gained unimaginable power, which they now use to enact murder on those who would harm them.
No longer a working Harlot, the Death Duelist is one of the lucky few who benefited from the binding. Using her newly awakened Blood Magic to fuel her attacks, she is capable of moving faster than a normal person and can easily defeat most enemy champions. As her name suggests, she loves a duel and will seek out the very best fighter the opponent has to offer, issuing challenge after challenge until she can finally be satisfied with her tally. These Death Duelists enter an almost frenzied state whilst fighting, which does leave them somewhat vulnerable to ranged attacks or another combatant entering the fray.
In combat, a Death Duelist is a deadly Hero who heavily relies on her impressive Movement, Dexterity, and Attack stats, though her leather corset and cropped jacket provide limited Protection. Armed with a wicked Rapier, which provides -1 Penetration to your attack, this character is best deployed against a single combatant and not surrounded by a mob. When it comes to Character Abilities, you’ll have access to Engage, which means the Death Duelist automatically wins the Opposed Roll when an enemy character disengages from them, and so always gets to make an Attack of Opportunity. If the opposing character has Slippery, however, then both players roll to disengage as normal. You may also use Expert Offence (2), meaning you may re-roll up to 2 dice when making a Combat action while in base contact with the target. Finally, Parry (2) makes this former harlot hard to attack. When this character becomes the target of a Combat action while in base contact with her attacker, you may force your opponent to re-roll up to 2 dice from the attack roll.
As a duelist, victory in combat is all that matters, which is highlighted by the Victory Rush ability. When this character kills an enemy character with a Combat action, it gains your choice of either an additional 1AP, replenishes 4 Life Points, or replenishes 2 Will Points. For the cost of only 14 Ducats, this Hero provides a lot of benefits and partners well with the already released Shadow Assassin or Dancer.
