ZADUKATS (KNUROSES)
The Orcs of the Er’Sael clan are known to make frequent use of mercenary forces. Typically, they seek sellswords for tasks devoid of glory, honour, or great fortune. It’s difficult to find willing participants for such filthy and poorly paid work, even among the Goblins of Ugruk-tar. Yet there exists a race willing to do anything for Dragon Ducats. They are commonly referred to as the Knuroses, but the Orcs have bestowed upon them a mocking epithet – Zadukats.
Members of this race are suitably aggressive on the battlefield and seldom bother to scrutinise the terms of cooperation. Simply show them purses full of coins, and they will boast of their readiness to undertake any mission. They will claim the task shall be done not merely well, but flawlessly, and that they are worth every last ducat. The clan’s Orcish warmasters delight in the Knuroses’ ridiculous bravado, though their opinion of the Zadukats remains, at best, mediocre. The truth is simple – hiring Knuros mercenaries is cheap, and that is all that truly matters to the Orcs.
In the Orc army, Zadukats are often assigned missions tantamount to suicide – these are grandly titled though so that the Knuroses feel they are performing extremely sublime deeds. A suicidal charge is therefore called the Vortex of Courage. The order to endure an enemy’s crushing assault is preceded by assurances that only the Zadukats are capable of such a feat called the Wall of Pride. A march through swamplands or into enemy territory is christened the March of the Chosen. It all usually ends in the same tragic way for the Zadukats.
The Orcs are puzzled by the Knuroses’ lack of analytical thinking, and how they fail to realise that many among them will never live to see their pay. Previously, the Orcish elders suspected a ruse, entertaining the notion that the Knuroses might be cunning beyond appearance. However, years of fruitful cooperation have only confirmed that the Knuroses are excellent, cheap mercenaries with a remarkably casual attitude toward survival in warfare.
