The process of sculpting Hollywood Cavalry has begun. I’m not concerned with historical accuracy, only Hollywood accuracy, so I’m looking at the classic cavalry flicks for wardrobe ideas. Wardrobe designers in those days loved their gauntlets, yellow bandannas, and tight trousers. The boots were a lot more supple and tight than the historical numbers with their hard leather uppers and squared knee flap. This character has a stereotypical felt hat flipped up in the front. Others will feature kepis and un-flipped Stetson-style hats with woven cord finished off in the iconic cavalry hat tassles. He also features something I’ve seen on several of the movie characters; sword belting done up to the belt to keep it out of the way with no sword attached. With all their historical inaccuracies, the Hollywood cavalry in Fort Apache were carrying the correct rifle, a Springfield Trapdoor. That really surprised me; I would have expected them to substitute Winchesters (which would have been a crime, as Winchester never could succeed in getting the military contract, try as they may). The first pack is troopers. The next pack after that will have grizzled sergeants, and other movie personalities (yes, including the big swaggering man we know from so many movies, lol).
