Otherworld Miniatures – Dagonites

My D&D career started in 1979, when I was given a copy of the Holmes Basic D&D boxed set for Christmas. Over the last 40+ years, I’ve played most editions of the game (some with less enthusiasm than others!), but my first love will always be that tatty blue book and the battered old dice set.
So when I recently had the good fortune to work with Zach Howard (AKA Arch Zenopus), and Chris Holmes (the son of Dr JE Holmes, author of that blue D&D rulebook), I decided to put together a small range of monsters which appeared in Dr Holmes‘ short stories.
The ‚Dagonites‘ were a race of evil subterranean fishmen, partly inspired by Lovecraft’s Deep Ones, but also the Kuo-Toa of Gygax’s early AD&D modules.
So Chris gave me his blessing to start work on some miniatures, and kindly supplied me with some sketches. Zach found all sorts of references from Holmes‘ Tales of Peril stories, and I got to work with Zhu Bajie on some concept sketches.
Once we were all happy with these, they were passed to Drew Day-Williams for sculpting. His smooth, clean sculpting style was ideally suited to the slimy subject matter, and five superb sculpts were soon finished. These greens made their way to me across the Atlantic with nerve-fraying slowness before I was able to send them on to my mould-maker and caster.
Several weeks later, I had several kilos of crisp metal castings, and some were quickly dispatched to Andrew Taylor for painting. His work was up to his usual superb standards, as shown in the attached photo.

So, six months later, they are available to buy in our webstore, a labour of love and nostalgia from start to finish. I hope you like them. It has been a lot of fun making them for you.
