We’re building a set of modular ruins for use with miniatures, ranging from a simple basic set of tumble-down walls to a whole cityscape of multiple levels, alleyways and rooftops.
Together with Italian scenery sculptor The Lazy Forger we’re hoping to improve on and add to our basic prototype set so that you can represent as much or as little as you need for your players in their overground adventures. Need a few brokendown walls? Rubble City will let you build many different setups from one kit. Want a gaming cupboard full of permanent structures for treasure-seeking adventurers? Rubble City does that too. Whether you’re playing D&D, Frostgrave, Mordheim, Confrontation, or any miniatures-based wargame, these resin ruins will fit the bill.
The Rubble City basic set contains 21 resin pieces scaled for 28-32mm models but easily repurposed with minor effort to suit smaller and larger scales. The basic set is enough to create roughly a 7″ cube of ruins and the modular jigsaw design allows a wide variety of layouts just from one set.
Rubble City basic set
Combine two or more sets, however, and you can really start to build your imagination. Add pieces from the expansion sets and any additional Unlocks and the possibilities become almost endless ! Corners on the main pieces of Rubble City feature an interlocking jigsaw joint allowing multiple build options. Additionally, Rubble City is designed with post holes so you can add your own custom-made floors, and with door and window holes to allow whatever level of detailing you desire. If we can unlock them, stretch goals will add resin doors, windows, staircases, floors, ladders, roofs and more !
Building with the basic set.
Stacking walls and adding floors.
We’ve made sure that there’s loads of detail and texture crammed into each master model and our casting process preserves all of that detail faithfully. Cast in a stone-filled grey resin the castings are stonelike-enough in appearance to be used straight from the box but will obviously benefit from being painted. The following pictures show just how good the castings look with a simple paint process of undercoat – basecoat – colour wash – drybrush, and the addition of flock, static grass, and other model planting improves their appearance even more.
You can leave the resin pieces unassembled for maximum replayability – building a different layout every time – or assemble them more permanently with superglue ( and a little filler around finger joints ) before painting and leaving them based or unbased according to your preference.
£1 – PROFUGO – In addition to supporting this kickstarter and helping us produce a wider range of pieces, you gain access to the Pledge Manager when the campaign finishes, allowing you to build a customised bundle of ruins.
£30 – DOMUS – One basic set of Rubble City walls – enough to build a 7″ cube of ruins or a small tabletop of low walls.
£58 – VILLA – Two sets of basic wall ruins. Enough to spread out into a wider ruin or one teetering tower.
£110 – PRAETORIUM – four sets of walls – more than enough to spread out across an entire 2′ square board (popular in dozens of current and popular skirmish rulesets).
£250 – BASILICA – ten sets of basic wall ruins. Enough to fill an entire 24 x 48″ tabletop with mazelike ruins or to build a taller, towering ruined building with multiple levels.
£500 – DECORUS – Limited to 25 sets. This Pledge is for those of you who want a pre-painted tabletop full of ruins. We’ll professionally paint 10 sets of Rubble City ruins *plus any add-ons you include in your Pledge* – your choice of assembled/unassembled – and in a number of basic colour schemes which we’ll co-ordinate and discuss with you once at production.
We’ve designed a broad range of add-on kits to further increase the scope of the basic Rubble City kit, but need your help on KS to sculpt, mould and produce these extra pieces. If we can unlock these you’ll have a huge range of buildable floorplans capable of serving for any number of fantasy, historical, and even post-apocalyptic tabletop settings.
Our existing range of goodies includes hundreds of bases, scenic items, and kits as well as miniatures, almost all produced in house, and we’d like to offer some of that breadth of options to backers on this kickstarter to help fill out your ruined city tabletop. NB Some of these images are WIP, unfinished master models and subject to change before final production.
BARREL PILES +£5 – Four markers featuring different-sized wooden barrels for use as scenic detail or cover from missile fire.
COVERED STASH +£5 – Two hidden supply markers wrapped in sacking and rope.
Ruined well +£5 – Remains of an old well with partially collapsed walls. Approx. 54mm diameter and 30mm tall.
Crate piles +£10 – Three piles of crates surrounded by rubble. Designed to work as individual rubble pieces or to tesselate together into a barricade.
Extra basic set +£30 – Another set of 21-pieces of wall in case the basic pledge levels don’t match the number your architectural dreams require.
Fieldstone walls +£13 – Pack of five lower level, tight-packed walls designed to offer even more variety to your ruins, or to represent newer additions made by recent residents of the Rubble. Approx. 23 x 15 x 155mm per section.
Fieldstone curves +£13 – As above, in curved section. Set of four walls, enough to make a rough circle approx. 200mm across.
Drystone walls +£13 – A third style of rubble wall to add still more variety, complete with corners and a cross-junction. Wall sections 23 x 15 x 130mm; four straight, 4 Lcorners, and one + shaped crosswall.
Brightspear’s Tower +£25 – every ruin needs a central watchtower as a goal or a rallying point. This 120mm tall resin tower suits just that purpose.
We do have a few extra, secret bits planned but for the most part our stretch goals form the bulk of our addons, and can be built into your Pledge by adding the relevant amount to your basic Pledge level ( eg. Villa Pledge plus Ruined Well plus Ruined Decks would be 58+5+15 = £78 ).
As a small company we can’t afford to offer huge numbers of freebies and equally don’t want to add too many stretch goals which might endanger a speedy fulfilment of your pledges – but we have a handful of extras we’d love to offer as new add-ons if you help us achieve higher targets. These include:
STUB WALLS & ENDCAPS £2500 – Our first and easiest stretch goal – a set of short stub walls designed to add blank endpieces for greater variety in even a single basic set. Add £5 to your Pledge to add this set of two walls.
COLUMN PACK – The second stretch goal will be a pack of full height columns or pillars, intended to support floating walls, archways, and to allow „false“ T and X junctions. Set of 3 for £5 added to your Pledge.
SHORT WALLS – At this point we’ll add short 9cm walls to the project – allowing more variation of basic room/ruin layouts. One each with/without window opening for £10
RUINED DECKS – If we can break this target we’ll produce a set of 8 different, basic resin floors designed to fit the post holes in the basic wall set. Add £15 to your Pledge.
LADDERS – If we’ve added Ruined Floors then your adventurers need a way to reach them ! Unlock this Pledge and you can add a set of different resin ladders to your set.
STAIRCASES – Need a more permanent floor access than makeshift ladders? This set, if unlocked, allows you to stone staircases to your Pledge.
CURVED WALLS – unlock this and we can add still more variety to your ruin layout, with curved versions of both high and low walls.
INTERNAL WALLS – Thinner section wall set designed to offer inner walls and small subdivisions.
OPENING WALLS – at this Unlock we’ll sculpt a set of walls with door and window openings.
ARCHED WALLS – Pack of two walls with block arches, adding triumphal openings to multi-storey ruins.
GABLE ENDS -This Unlocks a pair of gable walls to model pitched roofs and topmost storeys.
ROOF PANELS – If we can unlock this addon we’ll sculpt a set of ruined rooftops for dressing the uppermost levels of your ruins.
FLOOR TILES – Set of three different stone-textured resin tiles to use as internal ground floors or for paved areas and town squares.Choice of three different styles – fieldstone, flagstone, and cracked tile.
SECRET STRETCH GOALS
If we manage to get this far, we have several more hidden goals to try and unlock to add even more variation and scenarios of construction to your tabletop.
Postage costs will be calculated on completion of your pledge, during the backer survey stage of the campaign, and will be dependent on final weight of your base reward and any add-ons you may have chosen. All parcels will be sent by tracked/signed-for services through Royal Mail – delivery times will vary according to country of final destination. These shippings costs will vary greatly depending on the weight/bulk of any add-ons you choose – we’re confidently estimating (postal price increases notwithstanding) that this will add between £7-30 per customer for tracked/signed for mail, with highest costs being applied to overseas and/or large pledges (eg. BASILICA). For example, a VILLA pledge (packed weight just under 1 kilo) posting to the USA would need an additional £15 shipping added in the Pledge Manager).
Costs include not just Royal Mail’s actual postage charges – shown here ( https://www.royalmail.com/sites/default/files/Our-prices-2018-effective-26-March-2018.pdf ) but also enough to cover actual costs of packing materials.
Fenris Games is not liable for any customs or handling fees you may be charged by your country on import of your reward(s).
Fenris Games is a small company thrust into the limelight as the creators of the models used in Cthulhu Wars. We’re old school gamers with a background in professional modelmaking and prototyping, with a combined experience of almost 60 years. As well as Cthulhu Wars, our sculptors have worked for some of the biggest names in the wargaming industry, including Games Workshop, Wizards of the Coast, and many more.
The Lazy Forger is well-known within the European industry as a stickler for detail and has worked with companies like Spectre and White Dragon as well as on previous pieces for Fenris.
Risks and challenges
We’ve been making moulds and casting resin for over 30 years, and have made test moulds and pre-production castings of the Rubble City basic set to measure mould wear and longevity, so already have a handle on production time, wear & tear, and amounts of materials needed. All of our resin casting is done in-house with both vacuum and pressure-casting equipment – so the actual physical production of the kits should present no problems. We have a dedicated casting workshop with industrial-grade machinery designed to crank out resin models all day long.
Our sculptor has been perfecting his techniques for making the master sculpts on this project for over two years, and has all the tools in place to make whichever new pieces are Unlocked in a sensible timeframe. We’ve designed and improved on the modular jigsaw system so that any new pieces will fit easily into many different configurations with any existing pieces, giving you ever more possibilities for building new combinations of ruins.
This is our second Kickstarter. We’ve learned a huge amount from our first one, which is currently approximately halfway through fulfilment. The main holdup we’ve experienced previously is in waiting for production processes outside our control (mainly metal casting) but we’re now on target to finish that previous project within a few more weeks. While we used to also supply contract casting for other gaming companies, we now concentrate only on our own work, meaning that once fulfilment on the previous KS is complete the workshop will be clear to concentrate on Fenris business alone.
