Attack Wing Card Pack Preview Wave 1- U.S.S. Grissom
WizKids/NECA is happy to announce brand-new content for Star Trek: Attack Wing, starting with Star Trek: Attack Wing Card Packs. Each Card Pack contains 11 cards, Captain Tokens and a Ship Token. Each pack will focus on a particular ship and contain fun thematic cards with a new, efficient point-cost system that will add a new level of depth and excitement to gameplay. In addition, the new formatting and iconography for cards will now allow players to easily identify game effects such as triggers, durations, range and firing arc.
The first ship to be previewed is the U.S.S. Grissom, which was a 23rd century Federation Oberth-class starship. This science vessel was under the command of Captain J.T. Esteban. The U.S.S. Grissom transported Lieutenant Saavik and David Marcus to the Genesis Planet in order to conduct scientific studies on the newly formed world. While in orbit, however, they discovered the photon torpedo in which Captain Spock’s body had been ejected from the U.S.S. Enterprise. The U.S.S. Grissom came under attack by a Klingon Bird-of-Prey intent on exploiting the Genesis technology as a weapon. Although it was the Klingon’s intention to simply disable the Grissom so that they might take prisoners, the ship was completely destroyed, in what his gunner described as “a lucky shot.” The gunner was summarily executed immediately after.
The U.S.S. Grissom is a cost-effective ship reduced to only 14 SP compared to the previous Oberth Class Ship, the U.S.S. Pegasus at 20 SP. Even the generic version of the Oberth Class Ship has been reduced to 12 SP from 18 SP. The special ability of the U.S.S. Grissom highlights the thematic nature of this card pack. The new formatting shows the trigger of this special ability in BOLD TEXT: When this Ship would be destroyed, the attacking ship must discard one [Crew] Upgrade. If it can’t, place an additional [Aux] Token beside it. Just like in the movie, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, when the U.S.S. Grissom is destroyed, a crew member of the attacking ship must be “killed” as punishment for his “lucky shot.” This type of thematic gameplay can be seen throughout the new card packs.
Once again J.T. Esteban is the Captain for the U.S.S. Grissom. He is a Skill Level 3 Captain and costs only 2 SP. While he may not be the highest skill level Captain, he does bring value to the table for his point cost. J.T. Esteban allows you to equip the Captain’s Discretion Upgrade even though he does not have an Elite Talent Upgrade slot. Additionally, when this ship would be destroyed, you can move 2 [Crew] Upgrades equipped to this ship to another friendly ship. This ability demonstrates how J.T. Esteban was able to save his crew members even after losing his ship.
Captain’s Discretion is an Elite Talent Upgrade that for 4 SP allows you as a free action to discard this card and then perform the Action of a [Crew] Upgrade equipped to this ship. Note the new iconography which alerts players with BOLD TEXT that this is a FREE ACTION. This new formatting will help make rule interactions simpler and easier to understand. Any time you see FREE ACTION: on a card you will know whatever follows the colon will be a free action without having to use walls of text to explain a simple effect. Other examples include WHEN ATTACKING, WHEN DEFENDING, ACTIVATION PHASE, END PHASE.
Saavik makes her second appearance as a Crew Upgrade in Attack Wing. You will notice that there is a RANGE ICON on the card that indicates the range of her ability without having to add the text into the special ability itself. Using these new icons we can see that when defending, if this ship is within Range (1-2) of a Planet Token, this ship may convert 1 [Blank] into 1 [Evade]. Note the use of Icons to refer to dice faces such as blanks. All of these improvements should help to make a more streamlined and fun game play experience for all.
Federation Helmsman joins the crew by allowing you to place an [Aux] Token beside your ship to perform a White 1 [Straight], 1 [Left Bank], or a 1 [Right Bank] Maneuver. At 3 SP, Federation Helmsman adds the possibility of extra movement to your fleet that will help you explore the galaxy or gain tactical advantage over your enemies in battle.
The last Crew Upgrade in this card pack is an old favorite, William T. Riker. If this card seems familiar to you that is because it is the same as William T. Riker from the U.S.S. Pegasus Expansion Pack. However, we can see with this version of William T. Riker the new formatting and iconography is used to make his abilities clearer and more efficient. You can expect to see some updated cards like this in future packs that will use the new formatting to clarify card abilities.
To round out the U.S.S. Grissom Card Pack there are 3 new Tech Upgrades that you can use to upgrade your ship. Comm Station is a 4 SP Tech Upgrade that adds 1 [Crew] to the ship’s Upgrade Bar. During the Activation Phase you may disable this card and target a friendly ship (Range 1-2). This game round, replace the Captain Skill of this ship’s Captain with the Captain Skill of the target ship’s Captain. A nasty surprise that can give you a tactical advantage during combat, potentially allowing you to fire before your target or at least triggering the simultaneous attack rule should your ship be destroyed.
Close-Range Scan allows you to place a [Scan] Token beside this ship if during the Activation Phase this ship performed a [Scan] Action and disables 1 Shield. Close-Range Scan allows you to double up on Scan Tokens using them to reduce a defenders defense dice or to activate any number of cards that trigger off a [Scan] Token.
Finally, the last thematic upgrade in the U.S.S. Grissom Card Pack is Genesis Effect. This Tech Upgrade only costs 2 SP and during Setup allows you to place 1 [Crew] Upgrade with a cost of 5 SP or less face down beneath this card. During the End Phase, if this ship is within Range 1-3 of a Planet Token, disable all of its Shields. Flip the [Crew] Upgrade beneath this card face up, place 2 [Time] Tokens on it, and equip it to this ship, even if it exceeds its restrictions. The Genesis Effect creates life and with this card you can bring a powerful 5 SP Crew Upgrade onto your ship for only 2 SP. Yes you need a planet in order for this ability to work, but when it does it will be well worth the effort.
